When many people hear the name Sigmund Freud, their face crinkles up a bit. After all, wasn’t that the guy who claimed that everything was phallic but was constantly chomping on a cigar? The fact is, you don’t have to worry about us acting much like Sigmund Freud when you stop by. Many of his methods have proven unuseful, and we’re certainly not going to smoke a cigar in your presence!

But there’s something that Freud and his compatriots at the time stumbled upon, something that truly works: psychotherapy, sometimes called talk therapy. In its simplest form, it’s having personal verbal interactions with a trained professional in order to achieve a positive outcome in the life out the client. In our case, it’s to help those with pornography addiction or problematic sexual behavior.

With so many of Freud’s ideas falling away, why has psychotherapy proven to be so useful for our clients? Here are just a few of the reasons it works so well

It’s a Safe Place

Perhaps the part of psychotherapy that appeals to people most is the fact that they are allowed to say anything they want. The psychotherapist is a neutral third-party with no stake in the outcome. Certainly the therapist wants to help the client, but they have “no dog in the fight,” as the old saying goes. A therapist’s goal is to keep confidentialities while getting the person with sexual behavior problems back to a healthier life.

It Deals With The Current Problems…

When a person with out of control sexual behaviors comes to us, we’re certainly going to discuss the problems that they are currently having. How has the behavior affected his or her life, the lives of their loved ones, and the lives of their friends? Are there triggers that cause this problematic sexual behavior, or is it perpetual? The present can be difficult to deal with, because the problem is so immediate.

…and Future Ones

Talk therapy isn’t just about dealing with today’s problems. It’s also about giving a client the tools it takes to deal with the problems as they arise. Addiction isn’t something that just goes away, and someone suffering from it needs ways to deal with it when temptations come along again.

Clients who come to us for pornography addiction or other problematic sexual behavior won’t just learn one tool to help them change. Just as not everyone responds to the same medicine in the same way, not every psychological tool will work for everyone.

And Yes, We Deal With The Past

We’ve all seen motivational posters that suggest we should “forget the past, because only the future matters.” But in truth, our past shapes each one of us. Yes, it’s important to not dwell on the negative aspects of your past, but it should be acknowledged. What happened then can affect how life is now.

Talking works. Healthy people see therapists to make them more efficient, depressed people see therapists to bring their problems to light and discuss them.
